Is there always one person late?
When a group of people, in any walk of life, meet up it is likely that they will arrive at different times and this means that there will be every chance that someone will be late. There could be a hundred reasons for this and if it is a one-off then there is nothing to worry about but there are some people who are always habitually late. If it is the same person time after time who is arriving late and leaving people waiting then it will become extremely annoying and resentment will start to build towards the person who is always late. Perhaps they do not realize how annoying their time-keeping can be or they don’t care enough to get there in time, but it shows a lack of respect for other people.
Being in a band situation and having someone always late can be even more annoying as it can have some bigger consequences. If you are in a rehearsal room that you are being charged for, every minute is important and you can see why people would get upset about money being wasted. There are not many new bands with a lot of money to waste and if the same person is continually turning up as and when, it is going to start being an issue with the rest of the band. The money issue can make this worth pointing out to the late person and hopefully they will realize they are letting their band mates down by their continual lack of time-keeping.
If you are playing a gig, the repercussions of poor time-keeping can have bigger consequences. Band are only allocated a certain amount of time for a sound-check, particularly if they are playing on the bill with other bands and being late for this can be very bad. It will put the sound engineer in a bad mood with the band meaning he will be less inclined to help out and it gives less time to sort out any sound problems. If this leads to the band playing a poor gig because the levels were never set right, it is easy to see why the rest of the band would get annoyed with the late-comer.
There are some things to try to avoid being late if it is you. Always tell yourself you need to be there a half hour earlier. Set your clocks ahead. Prepare ahead of time. Know what keeps you from being on time.
What do you do?
