Just the two of us

Being in a two-piece band may be more fashionable now than it has ever been but you have to make sure the chemistry is right before you agree to make it a long-term thing. Bands with more people in it may have more potential for arguments and disagreements but they also provide ample breathing space and the option of getting a different opinion. Even if you marry someone, you don’t usually spend all the working day and then night with them but that can be the situation for a two piece band. Traveling around, sound checking, rehearsing and then playing gigs, it is like you are joined at the hip to your musical partner. In this sort of situation people get tired and frustrated so there needs to be a lot of consideration before starting a two-piece band.

With two of you there is probably more chance of getting your opinion heard and it takes a lot less time to set up and then pack away. There is no surprise that more and more people are thinking that less is more when it comes to being in a band but there needs to be a clear indication of how and when decisions are made. If it’s a joint band, then it has to be a fifty-fifty split with both partners having their say on what gets done. If the majority of music is done by the one person, then they may be right in saying that they should have the say on what direction the music goes in. This may cause arguments over the relevant merits of each individual in the band but there are few people who would say that Meg White (of White Stripes) offers the same amount to the band as Jack White does.

Of course, if you start to get bigger, it is inevitable that other people will get involved and managers and tour staff can cause a change in the chemistry in the band. If the interaction between the two band members is what created the spark in the first place, it is important to not lose sight of what matters the most. If being in a two-piece band is the most important thing, then that always has to be the focus and everyone else kept aside.

What is your success to being a 2 person band?
